Our History
Best Cuban Food in Miami
"Our food is good our customer are the best"
~ Jose Acosta "Pepe"
Since 1974
Original Rio Cristal has earned its reputation as the place for the best Cuban food in Miami. Since 1974, this beloved spot in Westchester has served generations with heart, flavor, and tradition. Founded by José Acosta “Pepe”, our restaurant became famous for a signature dish that remains legendary — a palomilla steak topped with a generous portion of thin crispy fries. That flavor, that history, and that community spirit still define us today.
Humble Beginnings
In 1974, Pepe opened Rio Cristal after years of experience running other kitchens, including Lila’s. He brought his vision of real Cuban comfort food to Miami, introducing what would become a classic: the “Super Rio Cristal” steak. That simple palomilla cut beneath a mound of papitas won hearts and filled tables.
Overcoming Challenges
Through the decades, Rio Cristal remained a community favorite until 2020, when the pandemic almost forced its closure. Thanks to the dedication of his daughter Ely Acosta, and later new owners committed to preserving Pepe’s legacy, the doors stayed open — and the flavor, the warmth, and the tradition lived on.
Where It All Began
More than memories—these moments reflect the soul, flavors, and community that continue to define Original Río Cristal.
